Seeking protection as a whistleblower, UIHC Radiology professor, Dr. Malik Juweid, on September 9, 2011, filed for an injunction against University of Iowa President Sally Mason in Johnson County District Court. Dr. Juweid's ongoing lawsuit against UIHC and the UI alleges that senior UIHC personnel, including Dr. Laurie Fajardo and Lois Geist, as well as President Sally Mason, retaliated against him after he warned of the dangers of excessive PET-CT imaging at UIHC, especially in cases involving children. In the motion for preliminary injunction filed September 9th, Dr. Juweid asked that President Mason be prevented from terminating him. In an affidavit supporting the injunction former UIHC physician Dr John Chaloupka stated, "Dr Juweid was actually a victim of a conspiracy among the administrative leadership at UI to have him unjustly removed." Dr. Juweid states, "The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has a number of outstanding medical professionals serving the people of Iowa. However, the UIHC suffers from systemic leadership failures resulting in a failure to incorporate peer reviewed recommendations to improve patient safety. While PET-CT imaging serves a valuable function in initial assessment and treatment, they should not be used on asymptomatic patients without any clinical or biochemical suspicion of recurrent disease. This has been stated in numerous widely published medical guidelines that were neglected or outright violated at UIHC as Laurie Fajardo and hospital administration apparently put profit before patient safety with disregard to guidelines by professional and expert medical organizations. The risk of these PET-CT scans and other un-necessary CT scans is simply too great without any corresponding improvement in treatment." Dr. Juweid seeks the public's assistance.
